Kalamazoo Country Day 7th and 8th Grade Entrepreneurial Competition
This year, Kalamazoo Country Day School’s seventh and eighth graders were invited to participate in an Entrepreneurial Competition hosted by Culver Academies. There are five middle schools participating in this competition: Kalamazoo Country Day School (Kalamazoo, MI), St Richard’s Episcopal (Indianapolis, IN), Stanley Clark School (South Bend, IN), Sycamore School (Indianapolis IN) and The Orchard School (Indianapolis, IN).
Each student in these grades had the opportunity to think about, plan, write a business plan and submit their summary to the Entrepreneurial Studies Program at Culver Academy, by November 20, 2015. The students could compete as an individual, with a teammate or as a team of three. Each individual or team had an adult mentor. The submitted summary of their company had to be 300 words or less.
Once all of the schools’ business summaries were submitted, Culver Academy’s Entrepreneurial Program selected seven finalists for each school based on:
- The innovative nature of the idea
- It’s viability – is it realistic?
- It’s sustainability – can it last for a while?
These seven finalists had 8 minutes to make their presentation to professional judges, followed by 3 minutes of Q&A in February, 2016. The final round will be held at Culver Academy in April, 2016.
Our first round winner was Jai Bollampally! He received a $500.00 award. The runner-up was Alaina Heimstra. They will both advance to the final round at Culver Academy in April, where they have a chance to win $1,000.
